91.1 WTJU 2008 Fall Marathon Fundraiser

WTJU 91.1 thanks you for 51 years of your support. By calling in your pledges and telling us you enjoy the high quality of music that our volunteers work so hard to produce, you help to assure WTJU's place on the airwaves for years to come. Of the myriad ways to discover new music today only independent radio allows you to hear the important classics of the past alongside cutting edge new music, as well as the community announcements and music calendars that are important to you. In that spirit, we invite you to our showcase of the great musical genres of Classical, Jazz, Blues and other adventurous programming. We will feature your favorites as well as more obscure performances.

Our fall fund drive begins October 24th and features five days of Classical music followed by five days of Jazz and Blues. All this is brought to you commercial-free by your friends and neighbors in Central Virginia. For fund drive details please visit http://wtju.net. There you'll find show descriptions, the new WTJU logo t-shirt and other premium gifts, an online donation form, directions to the station, a link to our web stream and much more. Then call with your pledge of support to (434) 924-3959 or 924- 3418. Happy listening!

Classical Welcome

Welcome to the 2008 Fall Fundraiser on WTJU-FM. We in the Classical Department are joining forces with our Jazz Department to bring you ten days of great music. We take center stage first, beginning at 6 a.m. on Friday, October 24, bringing you five days of uninterrupted Classical music. From chamber music to great symphonies, from early music to 21st Century compositions, lots of vocal music and opera, we'll play it all! The Jazz Department follows with five days of hot and cool Jazz and Blues. As volunteers, we love to share our passion, and in turn we depend on you, our listeners, for vital financial support during this special event. So mark the schedule with your favorites, enjoy our gift to you of great music, and call us with your pledge or donate online at wtju.net. Thanks in advance for listening and for your support!

Jazz Welcome

Autumn is such a wonderful time of the year. All across the nation days are turning cooler and leaves are brightening in anticipation of the fall show. In central Virginia, this change of season has an added implication: the local airwaves once again ring with jazz, soul, blues and roots music presented by passionate local DJs. Beginning Tuesday, October 28th with Miles Davis' eclectic electric period, and ending on November 2nd with African music from the 1950s, the 2008 Jazz Marathon will once again be full to overflowing with beautiful and challenging recordings, along with exciting live music.

The WTJU jazz department would like to introduce you to some of those riding the next wave of jazz in Central Virginia. Tune in Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday evenings between 7 and 9 pm to hear live broadcasts by Matthew Willner, Rick Olivarez, Joshua Walker, James McLaughlin and others. In addition to their performances you'll hear them talk of their careers and play selections from their recordings. And just to keep a little tradition in the mix, listen for some live Dixieland on Sunday evening from Nick Page's Mill Street Ramblers!

If your idea of community includes listening to live music with good friends, mark Thursday, October 23rd on your calendar: Belrio, a new Charlottesville jazz club celebrating it's grand opening, will open its doors to WTJU announcers and YOU for a pre-marathon jazz jam featuring local artists. Stay tuned to 91.1 FM for performer updates and further announcements on this event. Good times and music with friends. What could be better?

Whether you like to pledge up front and enjoy the week worry-free, or prefer to 'vote' for a favorite program by pledging during a specific time slot, we look forward to your call as we celebrate the music you love. We appreciate your support of WTJU, locally produced and shared round-the- world!
